Love Life is an American romantic comedy anthology series created by Sam Boyd and starring Anna Kendrick that premiered on the HBO Max streaming service on May 27, 2020.[1] The series follows a different person each season from their first romance until their last romance and "how the people we're with along the way make us into who we are when we finally end up with someone forever." [2]
On May 23, 2019, it was announced that WarnerMedia had ordered a romantic comedy anthology straight to series with the first season consisting of ten episodes for HBO Max. The series was created by Sam Boyd who was also expected to executive produce alongside Anna Kendrick, Paul Feig, Jessie Henderson, and Bridget Bedard. The pilot was also written and directed by Sam Boyd. Production companies involved with the series were slated to consist of Lionsgate Television and Feigco Entertainment.[10][11] On June 11, 2020, HBO Max renewed the series for a second season.[12] Janet Hubert, Jordan Rock, and Maya Kazan joined the second season as executive producers.[5]
Alongside the initial series announcement, Anna Kendrick was also cast in a lead role.[10] On August 13, 2019, it was reported that Zoë Chao, Sasha Compère and Peter Vack joined the cast in starring roles, with Scoot McNairy joining in a recurring role.[11] On November 5, 2020, William Jackson Harper was cast to headline the second season[4] with Kendrick set to reprise her role of Darby as a guest.[13] On May 3, 2021, it was announced that Jessica Williams and Chris Powell joined the main cast.[5] On July 20, 2021, Punkie Johnson was cast in a starring role while Leslie Bibb, John Earl Jelks, and Arian Moayed were cast in recurring roles for the second season. Kimberly Elise, Ego Nwodim, and Blair Underwood also joined the cast as guest stars for the second season.[6] The following month, Keith David was cast in the role of the season's narrator while Steven Boyer joined the cast in a recurring role.[7][8]
Filming had begun by August 2019 in Queens, New York.[14] The final scene of the finale was filmed on March 12, 2020, and production was forced to shut down the next day because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While several more days of filming pick-ups had been planned, they were able to complete the season without those additional shots.[15]
The series premiered on May 27, 2020, on HBO Max.[1] In Australia, the series was released on May 27, 2020, on Stan,[17] and public broadcaster BBC acquired television broadcast rights in the United Kingdom (where the series started airing on the broadcaster's main BBC One channel[18]) to the series on September 10, 2020.[19] The series is streaming on Lionsgate Play in India.[20] In the United States, the series was aired on TBS on August 22, 2021.[21]The second season was scheduled to debut on October 28, 2021, with the first three episodes available immediately, follow by three episodes on November 4, and the final four episodes on November 11.[9] The series was removed from HBO Max in December 2022.[3]

We knew from the start that this would be an anthology, with season two focusing on a different love story. How much will Darby remain part of the central narrative? How much of the rest of the cast will return and how much will they be involved?
Speaking to Deadline about stepping down as Love Life's lead, Kendrick said: "Now that I'm not the lead of the show, I feel like I'm finally allowed to say, 'I love this f***ing show so much. It's so good!' I watched Will's [Jackson Harper] episodes and I'm like, 'Damn, this is just so good.'"
Jackson Harper, who will be filling Kendrick's shoes, added: "I watched the first season because I'm not really a rom-com guy but it just dives into so much other stuff. It was really like what it's like to be twentysomething in New York and dealing with life in general. It's like a bunch of people in a tiny apartment are all on top of each other and the doors to your room are all see-through. It feels so real."
"They don't have to look a certain way ... if the story's there, you're gonna connect with whoever the person is. I think that's why Will [Jackson Harper] is so fantastic this season, that you just instantly lock in with him, and then hopefully people start to think outside the box in all love stories."

Due to coronavirus-forced production shutdowns, Summer 2020 has been an especially soft season. Click through our gallery to see how 18 freshman broadcast television shows -- some acquisitions -- fared in total viewers for their premieres this summer.
One of my favorite relationships this season is the one between Marcus and his sister. What did you want to bring to that relationship and when did you realize just what absolute gold that was?
WILLIAMS: We always wanted to have a light braid between the seasons. We always knew we wanted a little bit of Darby in Season 2, but not so much that it felt artificial or that it was taking any real estate away from Marcus. I think we found a nice balance to just have her be in a shared universe and braid it together, but not, in any way, have it overshadow the new story.

Love Life is an anthology series, meaning each season has focused on a different main character. In a potential third chapter, Kendrick hopes to center more diverse experiences. "[An LGBTQ+ story] was something we talked about when we were running around pitching the show from the jump, so obviously that's something we would be really excited to do," she told Variety in October 2021.

Love Life Season 2 starts off on exactly the right foot with a captivating performance from its new main actor and an opening premise totally outside of the typical rom-com tropes. I absolutely cannot wait for the rest of the season.
KENDRICK: Exactly. And I was really having a hard time. And I was like, do I not know this character as well as I should? - you know, am I failing at my job, basically. And then by the time that we finished, I was like, oh, of course I can't describe her quickly because it's 10 years of a woman's life and - you know, really formative years of a woman's life. 781b155fdc
